All volumes are printed to A5 size with glossy card covers. Each volume is limited to 550 copies, and every book incorporates a numbered certificate, each one individually signed by both the author and by the Trust Secretary. Each volume also incorporates a general arrangement drawing of the particular class of engine. Further volumes are currently in course of preparation, and it is our intention to try to produce one volume approximately every three to four months, if at all possible. Although the classes being covered by early volumes in the series are perhaps the most popular ones, it is intended eventually to produce volumes on many of the lesser known classes, and to cover some of the smaller railway companies as well, including narrow gauge railways. We
are producing this series for two particular reasons.
Firstly, it makes the best possible use of the extensive collection of
photographs that the Trust has accumulated over the years by making them
available to other enthusiasts. Secondly, it will help us to raise valuable funds so
that the Trust can move forward with its plans for the reinstatement of the
Saintfield – Ballynahinch line as quickly as possible. Whilst
we are using the photographs from our own collection, there are obviously gaps
in so much that there are engines of which we do not have photographs, or of
which the photographs we have are of poor quality.
In order to make the series as comprehensive as possible we would appeal
to any of our members, or friends, who may have photographs of Irish railway
subjects, no matter how obscure they may be, to please let us borrow them so
that we can make copies for use in future volumes. Now
that we have the facilities to scan prints, slides, or negatives, it is possible
to do this very quickly, and to return your originals to you in a very short
time. Every picture used will
be credited accordingly, and the supplier of the photo will receive a
complimentary copy of the volume in which it is used. We
need additional photographs for future volumes of this series, and list below
the classes of engines for which volumes are currently in course of preparation.
If you can help us with photographs of any of these, or indeed of any of
the lesser known classes, your assistance would be very much appreciated indeed.
========================================================================================================== The following publications were released in April 2009
Volume
9 ISBN:
978-0-905196-16-9 The latest volume of the series deals with the Large 4-4-2 Tanks of the Belfast & County Down Railway. This was the last type of 4-4-2T to be introduced by the B.& C.D.R., and consisted of only three engines, two built in 1924, and the final member of the class No. 9, which arrived a few days before the fatal ‘Ballymacarrett accident’ that was to seal the fate of the company. As
with other books in the series there is a brief outline history of the class, a
brief biography of each engine accompanied with a photograph, and a copy of a
General Arrangement Drawing of the engines is folded inside the back cover. The centre pages are given over to a history chart of the class, and the
second half of the book is in the form of an ‘Album Section’, each page
having two photographs of the class in service, as well as after being
withdrawn. The books are printed to A5 size, with a glossy card cover, and every
effort has been made to keep the information as accurate as is humanely
possible. This is Volume 9 of
a uniform series.
Price is £5:95, and postage
will be £1:00.
Carriage Stock of the Ulster
Transport Authority A
Reprint of the Carriage Drawings Book ISBN: 978-0-905196-17-6 During
the Blitz on Belfast in May 1941, the Drawing Offices of the Belfast &
County Down Railway at Queen’s Quay, and the London, Midland & Scottish
Railway – Northern Counties Committee at York Road were very badly damaged,
and practically all the rolling stock drawings, along with much other valuable
material, was completely destroyed. Following
the end of hostilities both companies set about the task of preparing sets of
new General Arrangement drawings, these being based on available information at
the time, in many cases it was necessary to measure actual vehicles in order to
get accurate dimensions. The
two companies worked very closely, and each produced their own volumes of
drawings. In both cases these
were produced to a scale of approximately 3/16” to the
foot, and whilst the dimensions given are reasonably accurate, in some cases the
drawings were not exactly to scale. After
the B.& C.D.R. and the L.M.S.-N.C.C. were absorbed into the Ulster Transport
Authority in 1948 and 1949 respectively, combined volumes of these books were
produced which incorporated the drawings of both companies.
In 1957, the year before the U.T.A. acquired the G.N.R.(I) lines in
Northern Ireland, and following the scrapping of much of the older stock of both
companies, the U.T.A. Drawing Office in Belfast compiled a volume of all
existing steam stock, together with drawings of some of the vehicles produced
for the new M.E.D. railcars that had been introduced in 1951. A copy of this 1957 volume is in the archive of the Belfast & County Down Railway Museum Trust, and we have chosen to re-produce it for the benefit of those who are interested in modelling the Irish railway scene. We had considered producing the drawings to the full size of the originals, but as the volume contains some 65 drawings the cost would have been prohibitive. We have therefore chosen to re-produce the drawings to A4 landscape format to keep the cost as reasonable as possible for the average modeller and enthusiast. The volume will be comb bound, and each drawing will have a space at the bottom of the page for additional short notes. Postage for this volume will be £2:25 (UK) and £3:25 beyond UK. =========================================================================================================== Steam Locomotives of Irish Railways Other
